Maritime Arbitration: Bridging Operational Experience and Legal Expertise

Interview published in IIDRC Panorama — September 2026, pp. 4–9

I was pleased to contribute to the September 2026 edition of IIDRC Panorama, sharing my perspectives on maritime arbitration and the relationship between operational experience and legal expertise.

Drawing on more than 35 years in the maritime and offshore industry, the interview explores how practical industry knowledge can assist tribunals in understanding technically complex disputes, while recognising that arbitral decisions must ultimately be grounded in the contract, the evidence and the applicable law.

The discussion also addresses London's maritime arbitration community, tribunal jurisdiction and mandate, cultural awareness in international disputes, and the growing influence of geopolitics and artificial intelligence on maritime dispute resolution.

A central theme is my belief that operational experience and legal expertise are complementary disciplines, particularly in disputes involving towage, offshore operations, vessel performance and marine casualties.
